PERSONAL MATTERS.

William Jones, a well-known road contractor at Gisborne, died suddenly early this morning. Mr C. N. Haslam, of Island Bay, Wellington, and formerly of Masterton, has been on a visit to Masterton during the week. Arrangements are being made for District Nurse Warnock to make her headquarters in Martinborough, instead of Greytown. Mr F. W. Shortland has definitely announced that he will be the candidate for the Taumarunui seat in the Government interest. The Mayor of Pariatua (Mr J. D. C. Crewe) will represent the Pahiatua Borough Council at the municipal conference at Wellington in July. Mr T. Sherrrard, of the Pahiatua Post Office staff and formerly of Pongaroa, has received notice of transfer to Wellington. He will be succeeded here by Mr Durant, of Waihi. Mr H. W. Waters, of Featherston, has been appointed to the position of chief steward of Hastings Club, and together with Mrs Waters, left yesterday for Hastings Mr J . Henry Lang, representative of the Australasian Y.M.C. A. 's at Hyderabad, India, arrives in Masterton on Wednesday next. He has a thrilling story to relate of the country, its people, and its perplexing problems. Miss Ellen Terry, the famous English actress, who is to appear in Wellington on June 18, and 20, for two nights, arrives by the s.s. Manuka in Auckland on Sunday. Miss Terry will have a week's rest at Rotorua before 'she starts her New Zealand tour. Miss Stella Barrell, of Maugatainoka, who is to be married next month, was entertained by her lady friends at a kitchen tea on Thursday W at the residence of Mrs W. Jirirvn. A very enjoyable afternoon was spent by the gathering presentThe wedding took place on Wednesday in St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church, Pongaroa, when Mr Charles Armstrong, of Wellington, fourth son of Mr and Mrs Armstrong, of Blenheim, was married to Miss Olive Lydia Beere, eldest daughter of Mrs G. JI. Hutching, of Maku. One of the early settlers of Wellington has passed away in the person of Mrs T. H. Ellison, who died at her son's residence at Lower Hutt on Thursday morning. Mrs Ellison was the eldest daughter of the late Mr Nun Wilton, one of the band of old colonists who laid the foundations of Wellington. He left a family of thirteen, in which the death of Mrs Ellison has caused the first gap. A feeling tribute to the services rendered by the Wellington Provincial Farmers' Union by the retiring president (Mr J. G. Wilson) was paid by Mr T; Moss, the president-elect, at the Wanganui conference. They would all miss Mr Wilson very much, said Mr Moss, for he had for many years been the friend, counsellor, and guide of the union. He moved: "That.this conference records its best appreciation and recognition of the long and valuable services rendered the Farmers' Union, and this provincial district in particular, by Mr Wilson, as president for so many years." Mr H. J. Richards, of Levin, in seconding the motion, stated that only a few of the older members realised how, multitudinous were the duties that Mr Wilson, had so ably carried out. The motion was carried amid warm applause.
