THE LIBERAL PARTY.

ADDRESSES AT DARGAVILLE

[By Telegraph.—Press Association.] DARGAVILLE, Friday. The Liberal campaign was opened here last night by Messrs Macdonald,' ex-Minister for Public Works, and Thompson, the member for Wallace.

Mr McDonald spoke mainly on land settlement under the Liberal regime, and compared it with Mr Massey's policy. With regard to the Premier's statement that he had put 20,000 settlers in the way of the freehold. Mr Macdonald said this was not true. The Liberal Government, in 1907, had given, these settlers Grown lands with the optional clause. It was well known that land outside endowment was being|| held under the optional tenure. T'hos fact was that the land Mr Massey saiojj was iit for settlement was useless, and no first-class land was now to be had. There had been a big decrease in settlement since the Conservative Government took office. The big men were not providing the revenue, but the small men on third-class land.

Messrs Thompson, Coatcs (member for the district), and Hoe (the selected Liberal candidate) also spoke.

A vote of thanks to the Liberal members, and confidence in the Liberal party and Sir Joseph Ward as leader, was carried by a large majority.
