PROGRESSIVE AKITIO.

The thriving district round Akitio has lony suffered from the difliculties of communication with the markets of the Dominion, and it is gratifying to note that tlie Government is awake to this fact, and has decided to lend the. settlers a helping hand. Mr Fisher visited the district yesterday, and promised that a. wharf should be erected —on condition that the settlers guaranteed 1 £(50,000 for the building of freezing works. " The proposal has much to recommend it, as it is tantamount to a statement that the Government will help Akitio if Akitio is prepared to help itself. No district should expect favours without making an effort on its own behalf. At. the present, time stock are driven long journeys either to freezing works or the nearest railway, and. the erection of meat works in the centre of the district will relieve the settlers of much trouble, anxiety, and labour. Mr Sykes is responsible for the statement that the Wai)igawa Company Avill prcbably be prepared to open works in the Akitio district, and we have no doubt that after the success of the local venture, the company will be at least prepared to give the suggestion very full consideration. "Everything comes to him who Avaits"- (if ho waits long and it seems that the East Coast settlers are at last to have their' wants attended to. A harbour at Akitio and a railway line from Masterton to Waipukurau would be the making of tho Easj; Coast district, and we trust both these works will be taken in hand in the near future. .
