WELLINGTON SUMMER MEETING

Itiy "Punter."J

On Wednesday next the sporting ! public will be -well catered for at Trentham, when the above meeting will ■ be held. As in previous years, excellent acceptances have been received for | the Wellington Cup and Telegraph Handicap, the two principal events run on i the opening day. Last year 21 horses '■accepted in the Cup, which was won by the locally-trained and owned Sir Solo, which horse is again engaged this year. Eighteen should go to the post on Wednesday. Other district horses engaged are Sir Knox and Sinapis. The Waterloo Stakes, one mile, weight for age, will be run for the first time on Wednesday, and some of the Dominion's best horses are engaged. Excellent train arrangements are acU'ertised, and Masterton passengers will be able to travel by either of two trains, one leaving at 7.30 t and the other about an hour later. Proceedings will open with the Trentham Hack Welter, for which a moderate field have paid up. The local horse Overrate is top weight, and recent ■ winners in Amity and Sir Donald are also engaged. Record, an inmate of Tilley's stable, is supposed to be above the average, and will probably start favourite. The Nursery Handicap, which follows, has drawn a field of 19, and some very smart juveniles are engaged. Pariform has been given plenty of time to develop, and has not sported silk since the spring meteing of this club. Recent winners engaged are Honesty (Martian —Success}, Daytime, Roumania, Martian Princess, Reputation, and Fabrikoff, and an excellent race should result. Several of the candidates are engaged in the Wellington Stakes, run on the second day. Stepney has again struck form, and on his double win at Marton must be considered remarkably well in in the Anniversary Welter, of one mile. With only 71bs above the minimum, the Achilles gelding should start favourite. Others engaged which have done well lately are Red Book (8.5) and Mono- ' logue (S.O). Merrie Frank (8.13) ran ■ second in the same race last year to Semaphore, when carrying 9.3. The Trial Plate follows, and an entry of 26 is carded. No doubt several of this number will drop out, but a large field is sure to sec the post. As any horse can start in this event which has ■ not won a race worth £100 to the winner, several recent winners are engaged. The Kuinara stable has a great record in this class of event at Trentham, and this year the cerise jacket will be carried by Banian and Anguish. Charlcroso, Birkful, Adroit, (winner of the Open Flying at Napier), and St. Elm have recent form to recommend them. Pavlova won twice at Marton, and the Highden stable have Bertrada engaged. Tho Australian-bred Silver Shield got on the winning list at Auckland, and will bo suited" by the distance (seven furlongs). in tho Wellington Cup, of £1300, a good deal of local interest will be manifested in the meeting of Sir Solo and Sir Knox. Both horses have done well lon the tracks prior to going to Trentham, and are well fancied by their respective owners. Midnight Sun is topweight with 9st, but will have to im- ■ prove on Palmerston running to have a chance. Bronze will be without the services of her old pilot tOlliver), and W. Bell will have the mount. It may be noted that the Highden stable withdrew Expect (winner of the Marton Cup) in favour of the Field Battery mare. Sinapis is next with Bst 61b. This year's New Zealand Cup winner won on the second day of the Wairarapa meeting, and if she does not run herself out in front over the first mile will be close up at the finish. Los Angelos appears to be coming back to form, and if in anything like his form of two seasons ago, Sst 51b would not trouble the son of San Francisco. Kilrain has Sst 31b, or lllbs more than he carried in the Manawatu Cup, which he won easily. His gallops lately on the tracks have been good. Lord Renown was runner up in both the Manawatu and Marton Cups, and can be depended upon to run a good race. Birkline is nicely in, and will have Gray in the saddle. Bleriot has come down from Auckland for this even!;, and Thrax has been left in in preference to Tamihausor, winner of the Metropolitan Handicap at Riccarton. Rinaldo may be reserved for the Waterloo Handicap, but if started will be one of the most fancied. Martius (7.9) is a three-year-old of promise, and won the North Otago Cup recently with 8.9 in the saddle. Leonta will represent the Fordell stable, and Byron will have the services of Dcelcy. Ladoga got a bad run in the Manawatu Cup, and has a great liking for the Trentham course. Peg is an unlikely starter at the meeting, and Odessa and St. Bees made up the field. A first-ch'.ss race should result, and the, weather has only to keep fine to see a very fast run -race. The following are the probable starters with their pilots:—Midnight Sun (L.' Wilson), Sir Jolo (J. O'Shea), Bronze (W. Bell), Sinapis (F. D. Jones), Los Angeles (W. Young), Kilrr.iii (A. Reed), Lord Renown (V. Lee), Birklinc (H. Gray), Thrax (F. E. doncs), Bleriot (J. Buchanan), Sir Knox (J. Conquest), Rinaldo ( — ), Martius (J. Olson), Leonta (W. Wellor), Byron (B. Deeley), Ladoga (R. Berry), Odessa (McDonald), and St. Bees (Cordue). Square Deal heads the list with Bst in the Ruapehu Hack, and after his double win at Marton is not harshly treated. Submersion is striking form again,, and ran well at Tauhcrenikau. French Rose won at Hastings, and Svcaborg has good performances iv the South Island. The top weight is a full brother to that good horse Postill- j ion. Tho Waterloo Stakes, a new race on j tho programme, follows, and a field of ten have made the last payment. The i meeting .between Autumnus, Rinaldo, I Bon Ton and Postillion should be worth J seeing, as only a few pounds in weight separate three of them, while Rinaldo | has the advantage of about a stone, j Pallisado may start in the Flying, also j Sir Moseley, and Martius is engaged I earlier in the day in the Cup. Rinaldo and Salzburg will bo coupled should I both start. j The day's racing will conclude with ( tho second leg of the double, tno Tele- / graph Handicap, of £750, six furlongs. (Continued on Pasre :;.">

No fewer than 25 horses have accepted for this event, and some of our best sprinters arc engaged. Bon Revc is at the top with 8.13 ( and has been left in in preference to that good horse Bandiera. Ermcngarde, Culprit and Gladiole are good beginners, and Gipsy Belle won recently at Auckland. Beldame is one of the most fancied, and on Ellerslio form must be given a good chance. Dearest will make her re-ap-pearance in this event after a long spell. It will be remembered the Soult mare won this event two years ago, but lost the race through weighing in over the correct weight. Lower down the list Grattan reads well, and this horse ran six furlongs at Marton in 1.13. Sunbird is fast, and Suratura won at Wairarapa. Should starter O'Connor get the big field well away, the winner will be very hard to iiud.
