VIOLENT STRUGGLE.

DETECTIVE AND SUSPECT,

[By Telegraph —Press Association.] " CHRISTCHURCH, Wednesday.

A sensational affair i.s reported to have occurred in Cokor's Hotel, in Manchester Street, this morning-, a violent struggle for supremacy ensuing between ;■ police detective and a man whom he wished to interview in reference to n burglary that had occurred in the neighbourhood some few hours'before.

Late last night, or in the early hours of this morning, the saddlery establishment of.Triggs and Benton, in Manchester Street South, way broken into, and some gold and bronze medals abstracted from a, case. An entrance was affected through a window at tho back of the premises. Acting on information received, Detective Haves went to the Coker '-j Hotel at about 11 o'clock this morning, and went up to a man who was standing in the main entrance. As tho detective .approached the man, it is alleged that- the .man 's hand went to his hip pocket, and feariug trouble, the detective grappled with him.

. Thereupon a violent struggle ensued, the two contestants fighting and grappling with each other in the main entrance, the hall, the side passage, and in the bar.

In the meantime an urgent summons had cone out for assistance, and Detective O'Connor made his appearance on tho scene.

The two officers had the man hand cuffed and conveyed to the police sta tion.

At the police station he was searched and in his hip pocket was found a seven-chambered rovolver, fully loaded, whilst a box of cartridges was. also discovered in his possession. It is stated that there were also found on him some of the missing articles from the shop.
