PERSONAL MATTERS.

Mr M. Lavery, of Masterton, left on Tuesday on a holiday visit to Auckland.

Mr and Mrs J. Berry, of Melbourne, have arrived in Masterton for the purpose of taking up their residence here.

Messrs J. Horton and G. Bannister started to-day on a trip up Mount Holdsworth in search of botanical specimens.

Mr A. E. Aston, who has been in t'hargo of the Puketitiri school, has been appointed an assistant mas.ter afc the Woodville school.

Gold stars have been presented by the United Fire Brigades' Association to Lieut. T. Fisher and Fireman J. Braggins, of the Greytown Fire Brigade.

Mr S. J. Moran, of Masterton, who spent the Christmas and New Year holiday period in Auckland and the Bay of Islands, returned home on Monday night.

Mr D. K. Logan, of Masterton, who had been on a holiday visit to tho Manawatu district for three weeks, has returned home, after having spent a very enjoyable time.

His Excellency the Governor and the Countess of Liverpool arrived in Christchurch from the West Coast on Tuesday night. They expect to stay in Christchurch about six weeks.

The engagement is announced of Miss Gladys Cundy, only daughter of Mr and Mrs Samuel Cundy, of Featherston, to Lieutenant Netherton, eldest son of the late Mr Oswald Netherton, K.C., of London. | The members of the Greytown Orchestral Society tendered a farewell social on Tuesday evening to Misses Bright and G. McHattie, who are leaving the district. The Orchestral Society presented Miss Bright with a silver pen and pencil, and Miss McHattie with a silver-mounted jewel case. The Catholics of Greytown presented Miss Bright with a handsome travelling bag, and Miss McHattie with a peggy bag.

Mr S. Inder, assistant postmaster at Christchurch, and formerly postmaster at Masterton, who has been appointed to the position of Assistant Inspector of Post Offices in the Central District, was met by the Christchurch staff prior to his departure on Monday, and presented with a spirit kettle and travelling rug. Mr Morris, the Chief Postmaster, in making the presentation, referred in eulogistic terms to the services rendered to the Department by Mr Inder. to the general esteem in which he is held, and to the regret felt by all at his leaving Christchurch.
