RATING OF PASTORAL RUNS.
Tho information contained in a letter which the Masterton County Council received from Mr G. H. Sykes, M.P., at its meeting yesterday, to the effect that the clause in the Rating Act relating to the rating of pastoral runs applied only to runs in the high country in the South Island will be received with feelings of satisfaction by farmers in the Wairarapa, and more particularly in tho Masterton County. This means that farmers holding pastoral runs in this district will bo required to bear their proper proportion of taxation. It it? obviously unfair that because a farmer owns a pastoral run of good country he should pay less in taxation than his neighbour, who has a freehold or Government lease. It is pleasing to have Mr Sykes' assurance in regard to the rating of pastoral runs, but we trust that the Government will make the clause of the Act in connection therewith more explicit' than it is at present.
