ALFREDTON'S GRIEVANCES.

It appears from a report published elsewhere in this issue that the representatives of the Alfredton Riding and the other members of the Masterton County Council are of one mind regarding the Alfredtou riding. Alfredton wants to breaK away from the Masterton County, and the remainder of the County would be pleased to rid itself of the Alfredton district. One would think that when such perfect agreement existed, severance- would be an easy matter, but a sum of about £6000 is tho trouble. This amount has been obtained from the Government, to be spent in the Alfredton district, and the ratepayers of that district wish to spend it in their own way. The money has, however, been- obtained by the Masterton Council, and they } and they only, have the right to spend it as they think fit. Alfredton wants to break away, but it also wants that £6000. Masterton wants to be rid of the troublesome Alfredton district, but it wants to have the spending of'that £6000. The Government are not likely to let the settlers of the Alfredton district take charge of the money voted, and it seems quite probable that there will be a deadlock. It appears obvious that some arrangement must be arrived at regarding the spending of the £6000 immediately, and this will leave the way open for Alfredton to break away from tho Masterton County.
