The steamer State of California struck an unchartered rock near Oambicr Bay, Junear, in Alaska, and became a total loss. Twenty five passengers were drowned, the majority while they were asleep. The steamship Jefferson was summoned by wireless, and arrived in time to save forty-two persons. Many of the crew also perished. Some of the passengers were bound to the new gold diggings at Thushauna, where a rich discovery ■ was recently made.
