Dcfnils are now to hand from America of the highest and largest chimney in the world, erected at the works of a mmm". compaiiy at Great Falls, Montana. The stack, in which is included 13,000 tons of perforated blocks, is 522 ft hign. and (56ft 6in inside diameter at the bottom, diminishing to 50ft inside diameter at tho top. The outisde diameters at the bottom and top are, respectively, 7Sft Gin and 53ft, while the outside diameter of the foundation measures no fewer than 103 ft. This tremendous chimney, more than half as high as the Eiffel Tower in Paris, has a draught capacity proportionate to its gargantuan dimensions, this being 4,000,000 cubic feet at 600 degrees Fahr. To be on quite the safe side its designers have allowed for wind pressures up to 125 miles an hour, and a pressure of wind and dead load on subsoil of 4.83 tons per square foot. Besides the perforated blocks, there have been used in the construction of the chimney 3075 barrels of cement, 5225 barrels of lime, 4180 cubic yards of sand, and 200 tons of acid-proof mortar, the latter constituting an acidproof lining, and capable of withstanding a temperature of 2000 degrees Fahr. In the foundations the cement used totalled 5200 barrels, the sand 2000 cubic yards, whilst double this quantity of slag was required. For polishing tan boots or linoleums use TAN-OL. It is quick, very easy, and wonderfully good.*
