A bitterly cold west wind with driving showers of rain rendered the .191:' Melbourne Cup day unpromising. Tho weather, however, moderated slightly by noon. The crowds were not deterred; and the Flcmington enclosures contained a record crowd. Before the .second race the predictions of tho Club that the previous record would be exceeded by 20,000 appeared to bo verified. A shower fell as tho Cup horses were doing their preliminary, but cleared oil. At tho start Duke Foot took up a position on tho outside, while Mattouree, on tho rails, and Shuja led the field. There was intense excitement when rounding the turn, where Piastre and Hallowmaus could be seen struggling to tako up the running. Uncle Sam, coining on afterwards, put in a very fast run, with Duke Foote falling buck into the ruck. Uncle Sam was being proclaimed the -winner when Piastre Cut him down, and Hallowmaus finishing woll, gained second honours. Results: —• Encourage Stakes. —Wise King 1, Macduff 2, Nata 'A. After a few strides Shuja went to tho front, and led past tuo stand from Cider, Ladies' Man, Eyeglass, Matlourco and Hallowmaus, followed by Danaus. Hallowmaus, Cider, Ladies' Man, Wilari, Bridge, and Matource moved up, with Duke Foote in the centre of the field well back, with Piastre and Uncle Sam next. Shuja and Matource still held the liohl at tho sheds from Dauaus, Aurofodina, Golden Footo, Cider, Eyeglass, Ladies' Man, Undo Sam, Duke Foote, Wilari and Hallowmaus. The latter by a fast run followed Shuja round the turn, Piastre then ranking in third place. Then came Dauaus, Ladies' Alan, Artesian, with Uncle Sam coming very fast. Duke Foote was well beaten, and Shuja fell back. Piastre and Hallowmaus were struggling for supremacy, and Piastre managed to draw away and won comfortably by a length and a half, with Uncle Sam threo-qunrtere of a length away. Ladies' Man was fourth, then came Endorus, Shuja, Mousmio, Sandbath, Bobadea, and Golden Point. Time, 3mm. -7-lsoc.

Steeplechase.—Continuance 1, Bibbenluke 2, Kiappa 3. Thero wore thirteen starters. Statocroft fell at the first fence. Won easily by two and a half lengths, the third horso eight lengths away.

Nursery Handicap.—Scotch Mult 1, Becks Lager 2, Tramontanta 3. Fifteen starters. Won by a head. Time, lmin lOjsoc.

Yanyon Handicap. — Slipper and Ptah (dead heat; 1, Captain White 3. There wero oighteon starters. In the run off Ptah won by a nose, amidst intense cxci foment.
