Tiie Government does not desire to interfere with the tariff system since the Tariff Commission Bill was killed by the Liberal vote in the Senate. Tho increasing prosperity of tho country might be injured if tariff tinkering is proceeded with. Tho Department, of Commerce had to first hold an inquiry which would bo of a purely departmental nature witli a view to ultimately forming a tariff measure.
