ROUTE LINED BY ARMED MEN.
STRIKERS SURPRISED,
Press Association-Electric Telegraph—Copyright. BRISBANE, Monday. Tho trams started running at three different points at noon to-day. One hundred experienced tramwaymen and 1.0 novices wero employed, all being armed. Largo forcos of armed men 1 mod the route. Tho crowds cheered the cars. Numbers of bnshmen havo reached the city, and are volunteering their services as special constables. Altogether, tho Police Commissioner has a force of 3000 men to guard the city. The strikers aro evidently cowed. A SURPRISE. The Premier's action iv starting the trams came as a surprise to the strikers, who anticipated that they would be started to-morrow. Mr Badger, tramway manager, denies that ho rode in the trams. Fifty thousand loaves were distributed in the morning. EXCUSE TO ARREST LEADERS. Mr Finiayson, a member of the Assembly, referring to ihe warning b,y he Commissioner of Police tnat the strike leaders would be held responsible for any disorder, and would be arrested if there was any trouble, declared:—"lf they arrest .00 of our vigilance ollicers, others will take their place, as we have _'~000 to depend upon. The police are seeking an excuse to arrest the leadois."
