LATE SPORTING.

MARLBOROUGH RACING GLUB,

The committee of the Marlborough Racing Club {ire now arranging their autumn meeting programme. The details of the stakes are at present in the bauds of ii sub-committee, but the committee have definitely decided to increase the stakes from £I_os to £1500. This popular and progressive Club is bound to receive strong support, and its plucky action in increasing the stakes, as it was done, from year to year, should meet with a hearty response from owners in all parts." The programme will probably be published in the course of. another week.

Nominations for the Woodville Jockey Chili's autumn meeting are quite "satisfactory. Amongst the list are a large number of Wairarapa horses, including Nedra, Amber and White, British Maid, Field Fare, Purakau, Full Rate, Leapuki, Longstep, Sinapis, Otaraia, Sir Solo, Sir Knox, and Bally Shannon. Old Gawain is now being trained at Opaki. The two purchases effected by Mr H. Hodge at the Waikanae sale are quartered at N. Williams' Clareville stable. Manitou, who won a Hack Scurry on each day of die Gisborne meeting, is a four-year-old gelding by San Fran—Queensborougli, an Austral ianbred mare by Kiiigsborough—Fen d'Artifice, by Fireworks. Whakawehi, ii half-brother by Daunt, to Main ton, was ti fair performer in 'lie North Island a few seasons ago, his successes including tho Napier Cup. Bad luck stuck very closely to that speedy horse Expansion, and on Thusrday he foil in the Craven Plate at Riccarton and broke his shoulder, being subsequently destroyed. In tiie Wanganui Guineas two years ago Expansion was cannoned into when the barrier rose, and losing his rider ran into the outside rails with great force. At one time, the horse was so badly affected in the wind that he could only go a few furlongs. He was operated upon for the compliant a few months ago, however, and since then ho has run several creditable races, hopes being entertained that he would later show his ability over even longer courses. His owner had no doubt about the success of the operation, but the racing men were watching for actual proof in races over a distiiuce. Now they have lost the opportunity of studying tho result of a very interesting case. He was bred in 100(5 by the Wairarapa sportsman, Mr W. E". Bidwill, having been got: by Birkenhead from the Gipsy Grand mare Immersion. Continuance, the winner of the last Grand National Hurdle Handicap, registered two smart performances over hurdles at Gisborno last week. His efforts on tho second day was specially attractive, as, even admitting that the opposition was not of a high-class, thero was considerable merit in -carrying 13.10 to victory over a mile and three-quarters in the fast time of .uiin 17secs, which must be just about a record for the Dominion.
