Kitcat, formerly oT Eketalmna, Las been appointed honorary chaplain to the Diocesan Girls' Collegiate School at Marton. The death occurred at Paliiatua on Saturday of Mrs Ruth Bacon, wife of Mr T. Bacon, who was well-known in Masterton, where there are a number of relatives living. Mr J. Payno, M. P. for Grey Lynn, arrived in Mastertou from Wellington this morning on a business visit. He. returned to Wellington this afternoon. Messrs Mayo (conductor) and Elder will represent the Masterton Municipal Baud at the annual meeting of the North Island Brass Bands Association at Gisborne this month. Mr Ben Fuller, of Wellington, and a member of the firm of Fuller ami Sons, vaudeville and cinmatographio proprietors, was on a visit to Masterton to-day, ana returned to Wellington this afternoon. A cable from Cape Town states that. Major-General Sir Henry Jenner Scobell, X.C.V.0., O.B.,*has died from enteric fever. Major-General Scobell had been in command of the forces in Cape Colony since 1S)O9. The deceased is supposed to have contracted the infection during his recent tary tour in the Orange Free State. Up till the end of December no dangerous symptoms whatever had manifested themselves. The death occurred at New Plymouth this morning of Mr H. S. Fit'zherbert, S.M., at the age of 00. He sat on the Bench on Tuesday last, but had to adjourn the Court on account of illness. He was a son of Sir William Fitzherbert, and was himself an M.li.R. in in the 'Eighties. Death was duo to cancer. His Excellency the Governor will arrive at Gisborne next Friday, travelling overland by motor from Rotorua. and will leave on Sunday for the South. During his visit there he will lay the foundation stone of the new Hospital, and Holy Trinity Church and will probabl.y . turn the first sod of the Gisborne end of tho Napier-Gisborne railway, the tiuanga.roa route having been decided on, according to a telegram from Sir , James Carroll.
