STILL NO SETTLEMENT.
HAGGLING OVER A TRIFLE.
"AT HIS OWN REQUEST" OBJECTED TO.
Efforts made yesterday to bring about a settlement of the tramway strike failed, although the points in dispute were materially reduced. The demands in the men's ultimatum were:—(l) Inspector Fuller's removal from the service; (2) indemnity .against legal consequences of striking; and OS) guarantee against victimisation on resumption of work. The representatives of the City Council aijjl Strike Committee sat in confer0* all day, anil reached a basis of agreement to this effect: Fuller to be transferal to oilier employment; claim i"or indemnity waived; no employes to be victimised. This agreement was submitted to a full meeting of the strikers, who rejected the first and principal clause because the terms in which it was drawn up set out that Inspector Fuller's transference was "at his own request." Over these four words the parties are now squabbling childishly, while the public interest is being sacrificed.
