Sir Robert Hart has definitely resigned his position, whioh will be taken by Mr Aglen.
(Sir Robert Hart, G.0.M.G., K.C.M.G.. M.A.. LL.D., InspectorGeneral of Customs in the service of the Chinese Government since 18(5!., is among the most interesting personalities of the British Empire. Born in Irelaud seventy .six years ago, he, at an early age, entered the Consular service in China iv 1854, and held some important posts, until in 1859 he was granted special permissiou to resign and accept au aopointment in the Chinese Imperial Maritime Customs. He quickly rose to the highest offices, and has beeu regarded as oue of the strongest men iv the East. He bas received over twenty decorations, from practically every one of the great powers of the world. His Influence on the East is beyond calculation, but it is kuown that his great power has always been exerted iv the direction of peace, progress, prosperity, enlightenment aud clean government).
