DISTRICT NEWS.

(From Our <)ini Correspondents.)

KOPUARANGA

It cau fairly be claimed that tho country iv and around this district has never "looked better for the time of the year than it does now. The recent rains have proved beneficial to stock, crops aud pasture alike

It was noted in the columus of a recent issue of this paper that a wellknown farmer south of Mastertou had bred aud killed a pig of tremendous portions & -that tho same pig had beeu hung up for exhibition in one of the butchers' shops in Masterton. It may be only a coincidence, but it is at least interesting to kuow that the manager of the Carterton Bacon factory was purchasing pigs in Mauricevilie la.. Monday, and purchased one which turned the scales at something like -lOOlbs. Perhaps the credit of tbe growing of this monster belongs rather to Mauriceville than to Taratahi !

Owing to tho bad night no householders' attended ou Monday last, to elect a school committee. A meeting will be hold tor that purpose on Monday, tho -4th inst. The new teacher. Mr A. W. Rose, took charge of the school to-day. The attendance has been very low ou account of the measles. Speaking iv a sub-leader of the representation of schools at Hoard elections, it was not necessary to quote Taranaki. For instance the Masterton School, with 000 children, has nine votes; Opaki, with 35 children, has seven votes and so on. And the same absurdity exists in the county elections. The owner of a live-pound section has one vote; the owner of a fifty thousand pound station has three votes. The Harbour Board election in this district was a decided failure. Not 5 per cent, of the ratepayers were aware of the election, or of its significance. It is a wonder'some of these hard-headed parliamentarians have not loug ago objected to the new method of voting—that of placing a cross opposite the candidate voted for. The method is bad in principle, where more than one candidate is to be voted for, it discounts the value of "lumping," and it places in the hands of the deputy returning officers a very great tomptatiou—a temptation that, 'should never exist on a voting papier. Where only oue candidate is voted for (aud two aro required) there is nothing to prevent au unscrupulous deputy from placing "a cross against the name of a candidate he personally favours. Under the old system of crossing out the names this did not exist. "

The local creamery has be_u put on half, time and is now receiving milk every other day.
