PERSONAL MATTERS.

Mrs F. McCurdy, of Palmerston North, late of Masterton, is at present on a visit to this town.

There is no imnrovemeut in the condition of Mr J. Ewington, sanr., who is lying seriously ill at his residence, Lansdowne. His condition is causing his relatives much anxiety.

Cambridge aud Birmingham Universities have conferred the degree of Doctor on Sir Joseph Ward, says a London cablegram.

Lady Ward is to launch the battleship New Zealand on the Clyde on Juue 2SHh.

The Governor is at present on a short visit to Marlborough, aud will attend the local races there to-mor-row, and also spend a few days shooting.

The appointment of Mr T. H. Ellingham as a member of the Wellington Laud Board expires on May -Ist. The Board is now inviting the nomination of persons suitable for election to the position.

Mr W. Nobie, chief clerk at the Masterton railway station, who has been promoted to a position on tne Thorndon station, left for Wellington today. Mr W. P. Carter, official receiving officer, will fill the vacancy, pending the arrival of Mr Noble's successor.

The interment of the iate Mrs Ralph Bartlett, of Lansdowne, took place yesterday afternoon, and was attended by a large, gathering of relatives and friends. A short service was held at St. Matthew's Church first, after which the cortege proceeded to the cemetery, where the burial service was conducted by the Rev. Watson. Messrs J. B Russell, F. G. Russell, G. H. Russell aud 11. O. Russell, sous of deceased, acted as pallbearers. An exceptionally large number of wreaths covered the coffin.

Mr H. F. Green was appointed accountant to the Mastertou Borough Council last evening. Mr Green has been in the employ of Messrs Dalgety aud Co., of Mastertou. as ledgerkeeper, since January last and prior to that was employed in the Old Country. There were nine applications, included amongst which were oue from Napier and one from Hawera.
