The Johannesburg Star says that in a case in which the native confessed to rape, the judge said that he was unable to hold out any hope of reprieve. The information available to the public does not disclose any palliative circumstances. The Rhodesian law provides for a death penalty in the case of a native convicted of au attempt alone. The paper adds: '•Lord Gladstone has failed to appreciate the conditions of the couutry.
