SKATING CARNIVAL.
Notwithstanding the inclemency of the weather, quite a large number of enthusiasts from Mastertou aud tho surrounding districts attended the Fancy Dress Skating Carnival field iv the Towu Hall, uuder the management of Mr W. -T. Berrill, last night. Taken altogether the Carnival was a decided success, and. the number of skaters taking part iv the programme testified to the fact that this exhilaratiug pastime is bocomitig very popular in the Wairarapa. Some of the costumes worn, by competitors were very original, effectively concealing the the identity of the wearer, aud a pleasing spectacle was afforded uy representatives of almost every nation, from the sedate Uolestial with his flowing pigtail to tho huge Highlander in kilts. All moved iv perfect harmony, <o the excellent music supplied by tho Knahiue Battalion Band
During tho overling an exhibition of trick skating was giveu by the Masters BerrilK'i) and Misses Gwen Kerrill and Ewart, and was much appreciated by those present. The juveuile performers went through various feats of balancing and serpentine skating, with a graceful oase that was very effective. The general skating indulged in during the evening was exceedingly enjoyable,, the condition of the floor being favourable. The absence of "spills" was a notable teaturo.
The competitions hold during the carnival gavo rigo to much interest, and some exciting finishes were witnessed. The potato race, which created a great deal of amusement, was won by Mr G. Fenwic-k, second place beiug secured by Master 11. Berrill. The judges experienced considerable difficulty in making distinctions between some or the costumes, but finally selected Miss Reid, who represented "Ruination," as the best dresspd lady in tho Hall, and Mr G. Keinvii-k (Chinaman) as the best dressed gentleman. Other awards wore:— -Best couple in Hall, Mi.ss Gallagher nm\ Mr JNlcMaster; bnst lady Skater, Miss Gallagher 1, Miss C Jierrill 2 ; best gentleman skater, Mr Borrill 1, Mr Me Master :i; 880 yds championship, Master R. Jierrill. Among the ninst noticeable representations »vere the following:—Miss Reid, "Ruination" ; Miss Gallagher, "Lady Masher" ; Miss H. Heardman, "Peasant Girl"; Miss C.
