A TOURIST TRICK.

WOODSIDE TO IViOUMT HECTOR.

A deputation from Greytown, introduced by Messrs Buchanan and Field, M. , -P.,"waited on the Prime Minister yesterday afternoon (says the Post) to ask for assistance in making a tourist track from Woodside to Mount Hector. The local committee is making a track from the vaHay to Mouut Reeves, and the deputation asked for tha allocation r.f the sum of £70, accrued '"thirds" from the Featherston County, to be applied for this purpose. Another request was toat a section of twenty acres of Crown lands be vested in the County Council in aid of tin's project, and, further, for the expenditure of a sum of £100 to form a track from Mount Keeves to Mount Hector, thus forming a continuous track from Grey town to Otaki. Mr Fielfi, memjjlber "for Otaki, has already secured a of £50 for work on the Otaki side from the point known as the Otaki Forks. The deputation consisted of the Mayor of Greytown (Mr D. P. Loasby), treasurer to the local committee, Mr Mark Mastou (secretary), Mr A. M. Wilkinson, representing the Featberstou County Council, and Mr T. M. Drummond, surveyor. Mr Buchanan rerjresented that the Wairarapa had been left out in the cold in respect to tourist matters, and Mr Field urged that the proposed track would be of advantage not only from the tourist but from the stock-track point of view, it was also urged that the Alpine scenery en route was in many respects equal to anything that could be fouud in any part, but at present, owing to the absence of tracks, it had been reserved for enthusiasts. Mr Euchauan added that the Acclimatisation Society had recently been liberating deer there, and there were great possibilities of sport therefrom. The Prime Minister said the Featherstou Couuty Council ought to apply

to the Laud Board to have the £70

or thirds expended in the direction jjjtfpropospd. If that was done, he would TPoe willing to make a grant of another £100, provided it was supplemented by local contributions amounting to £70. Ho would look into the question of the reserve.
