THE CHAIRMANSHIP.
(1>!I Telegraph— Ou-n Correspondent.) WELLINGTON, Friday.
Mr Massey, Leader of the Opposition, sprang a surprise upon the House this afternoon by giving notice of his intention to move that Mr W. Fraser, M.P. for Wakatipu, be appointed Chairman of Committees in the House of Representatives. The Govermneufc caucus decided to-day that Mr Davey, M.P. for Christchurch East, should be tiie Government candidate for the position. The party is, however, not unanimous on the point, and Sir Win. Steward, who will also be proposed, will have a large following. The division is expected to be very close.
