THE AUSTRALIANS' VISIT
FIRST TEST MATCH
NEW ZEALAND BEATEN BY
NINE WICKETS
(By "Telegraph—Press Association.)
CHRISTCHURCH, Tuesday
The test match was concluded today iv fine weather, the Australians winning by niue wickets. The wicket improved with a drying wiud aud Midlaue and Sims continued New Zealand's secoud innings. The last-named, after compiling 11, was caught at-the wickets. McFarlaue took his place, and Hop kins iv the next over shattered Mid lane's wicket
Cliff replaced him. but was clean bowled by Hopkins. Bennett joined McFarlaue, but lashing at Hopkins, was clean bowled. Boxshall was the iu-goor, but McFarlaue lashed out at Whitty, and was caught at third mau by Warne. Howden was the last man in. Boxshall got what proved to be Hopkins' last over, and got a four to fine leg, but was then stumped from a rebound off the wicket-keeper's pads. Mayue aud Bardsley weut iv for the Australians, who had 108 to win, and at luncheon adjournment the first named had scored 35 aud Bardsley (5. Mavue continued to pile up the score, but" Bardsley, whose score was unaltered, was clean bowled by Bennett. Simpson followed, and he aud Mayue compiled the necessary ruus to win. The New Zealand bowling, with the exception of that of Beuuett, was made to look very simple by the fine battiug of Mayue. Bennett, however, bowled splendidly, aud while the batsmen were making runs at the rate of 100 per hour, Beuuett sent dowu 7.5 overs for fifteen ruus aud oue wicket. It is questionable whether the New Zealand skipper was not at fault in not starting with Beuuett, aud seeing that Haddeu was the first bowler tried in the innings, the fact that he was not put on till 97 runs had been scored is apparently inexplicable.
