GLADSTONE NOTES.

The Gladstone Men's Society held their opening social on Monday. There were about sixty present and a most enjoyable time was spent. The President of the Society, the Rev. L. Thompson, M.A., opened the social by giving a short account of the aims for which the Society was formed, ancM the secretary, Mr A. G. Mason, made a few remarks on the progress of the Society since its commencement iv July last. In the course of the secretary's remarns he alluded to the way in which the membership had increased from eight members at the commencement to thirty-one ' members at the end of the session. A short account was also given of the syllabus. The first item ou the programme was a dialogue entitled "A Matrimonial Advertisement," in two acts. The characters were well sustained by Misses Turner, K. aud J. Mason and Messrs P. Tattle and H. Mason. The scene was well arranged and proved very laughable. Recitations were given by Messrs W. Gundersou, H. Mason, aud J. Hebenton. Songs were contributed by the Rev. L. Thompson, and Mr A. G. Mason gave a violin solo. The President spoke briefly on the life of St. Patrick, his remarks beiug much appreciated. .after supper had been haiided round the evening brought to a close by the singing Auld Lang Syne.

The Sunday School picnic was held last Saturday, in glorious weather. There was a goodly number present, and games and skipping were kept op until darkness fell. The Rev. L. Thompson congratulated the Sunday School teachers on the way they had carried out their duties, and especially on the manner in whioh the Sunday School children had acquitted themselves in the examination.
