SHUNTING ACCIDENT.

A distressing accident happened at the Gore railway yard this morniug, the victim being Forrester Mackley, au engine-driver on the Waikaka line. Mackley was standing on the engine attached to the outgoing Clinton goods train, talking to the driver, aud while jumping down off the footplate, a truck, which was being shunted, and which he did uot notice,struck him on the back, knocking him down and carrying him along underneath, Mackley was carried fully thirty foet before a bystander noticed the accident, and. promptly applied the brake. When extricated, the unforruuate niau was conveyed to the Hospital, where it was found that the injuries sustained were a shattered shoulder, loss of the index linger, and part of the thumb. One arm mny have to be amputated.
