The weather is simply magnificent and there is every present prospect of a pronounced success for the carnival. Pigs will be judged iv the afternoon. The motor car competitions, in the afternoon, are looked forward to with eager anticipation aud promise to be the chief source of attraction today. For the first day the attendance is unusually good, aud the excursion trains are well tilled and the hotels are all crowded. The wool-classing, in the Agricultural Hall, is causing much interest. The awards were made in the industrial, art and needlework section, in which some very creditable work was shown. In the sections devoted to art and technical schools there were exhibits from Wanganui, Wellington, Duuedin, Palmerston North, Masterton aud Pateu, the studies and models showing very good execution, which also was evident in the hand-writing, mapping, drawing and brush-work.

Iv poultry, Lancaster was first In Plymouth Rocks, E. J. Watson and Tavendale took principal prizes in Orpingtons; Clifford Smith and Mrs A. T. Box, Wyandottes; Aitchinson, Don Stewart, A. R. Bryant, Tavendale, Cunningham aud E. M. Broughton, in Leghorns.

The riding competitions and ladies' driving are now proceeding.
