•l°Mr G. Falla, statioumaster at Masterton, is iudisposed and coufiued to his room. His duties are beiug carried out in the meantime by Mr Noble, senior clerk.

Mrs Pikett, of Mastertou, has passed the advanced singing examination in Wellington. Owiug to an illuess she was unable to sit iv Mastertou, and had in consequence subsequently to go to Wellington.

Mr W. G. Foster, mauaging director of the Wellington Meat Export Company, who has been on a visit to the Old Country, returned to Wellington last evening by the louic.

Mr C. F. Gayne, who has been assistant statioumaster at Rangiora for several years, will leave shortly to take charge of the station at Aromoho Junction, Wangauui.

Mr H. N. Holmes, general secretary of the Wellingtou V.M.C.A., is at preseut iv Auckland, aud is the guest of the Hon. George Fowlds at Mount Albert. He is haviug a holiday for the benefit of his health, and left for Rotorua yesterday morning.

Mr J. K. Goucly, who is retiring on penniou from the mauagement of the. Hawke's Bay aud Poverty Bay divisiou of the business of Dalgety and Co., Ltd., after over twenty years' service, was ou Saturday, at Napier, presented by the company's Napier, Gisborue, Dauuevirlie and Wairoa staffs with au album of photographs aud other tokeus of esteem.

Mr Thomas Dowliug, who was a member of the Victorian Legislative Couucil for mauy years, and is the author of several works on the surplus wealth tax, was married at "Jellalabad," Darlington, near Camperdown (Victoria), last week. He is eighty-two years of age, aud his bride, Miss Moody, a governess, is thirty-four.

Tbe degree of Doctor of Medicine was conferred ou the following New Zealauders at Edinburgh ou Capping Day :—Claude Ernest Addison Coldicutt; Arthur Thomas Patersou, M.8., Ch.B., 1907; Charles Fulton Pattie, M.8., Ch.B. (with first-class honours), 1907; Francis Lidderdale Scott, M.8., Ch.B. ; Cyril Hockeu Tewsley, M.8., Ch.B., 190(5; George Herbert Ussher, M.8.. Ch.B., 1907. Dr Pattie was awarded a gold medal for his thesis, and also gained the Goodsir Memorial Fellowship. Drs Coldicutt aud Scott were commended for their theses.

Captain McDonald, late chief officer of the steamer Maori, has been appointed to the command of the Uuion Company's training ship Dartford. The ship, which is to be docked shortly for overhaul and survey, will afterwards proceed to Newcastle, where it is reported she will load with a cargo of coal for Honolulu. It is stated that the ship will afterwards probably go to Puget Sound to load a cargo of timber for Australian aud New Zealand ports.

All old settlers in this town will remember that fine old coach driver "Hike," who for many years drove through this district for Hastwell and Macara. "Israel High" has now passed away iv his 79th year at the Home for the Aged and Needy, where he passed his remaining years. Hike came to New Zealand forty years ago with Cobb and Co. 's coaching plant when it first reached this conntry from Australia. He was a notable whip and a favourite on the loug road which he was wout to traverse. When the railway came along aud his occupation was goue, he served the late Mr Elkius for some years and looked after his garden and poultry. Illhealth finally compelled him to seek refuge iv the Wellington Home, where he spent his last days in comparative comfort.
