We published in our last issue a letter from an old Masfcertoniau, Mr S. Pearson, who urged people in the country to work for the introduction of Bibles iv schools by attending the

annual meeting and only voting for candidates who favour a local referendum on Bible reading. We are altogether in favour of School Bible reading, bat we fear that Mr Pearson's suggestion is utterly impracticable. Does not Mr Pearson know the difficulty which exists in getting a satisfactory attendance of householders, and the further difficulty in obtaining the consent of settlers to act ou committees? Now-a-days the Board is everything and the Committee nothing. Wo remember tho time when school committees were real live bodies, with substantial powers of government. Then they took a keen interest in school matters. Now, school committees are discredited, they are mere Board ciphers. Twelve months ago, when tho annual statutory meotiugs was held, we do not suppose oue fourth of the householders iv the Wellington school district knew that they were boing hold. This is the policy of the Wellington Education Board, aud it tends to destroy local interest in school committees.
