LATE TRAIN FROM WOODVILLE.
HOUR OF ARRIVAL CANNOT
lib! ALUKRKD
Tho petition from cab and express owners and drivers in Mastorton, respecting the acceleration of tho evening traiu from Woodvillo ho aa to roach Mastorton earlier than 10 p.m., was forwarded by tho Mastorton Chamber of Commerce to the General Manager of Railways, and tho reply from that official received at yesterday's meeting of the Chamber is that, atter/'eareiul investigation, it has boon found impossible to comply with tho [ request. Tiie ollicial explanation of this refusal is as follows :—The traiu in question serves that portion of Weviravapa lying between Woodville ami Mastet'tou. and has to work goods as well as passenger trallie. The pas- | seuger business is altogether insuinciont. to warrant , , tho train being run as a fast passenger service. It has, ! moreover, to slop at all tho various ! stations en route, and form one of tin? \ connecting links with YVangauui. I Under tho circumstances stated, it
would be necessary, in order to give effect to the request of the cab and express owners, for the traiu to leave Woodville considerably earlier than at present. This would not lie in the interests of (he district" served by the train, and as the railway timetable has, as far -is |j:wsihb.', to be arranged on lines that will best serve t lie w hole of the district through which the (rain :un.-\ the Minister regrets that h<:> cannot see his way in the circumstances to make any alteration iv the dirco!"ion suggested.
