LATE MR JOHN ELLIOTT.

HIS LAST RESTING PLAGE

(Sner.;<r/ in Uiiilu Tiling

"Under the willow he's slopping."' On the rising ground above tho valley of the Awakiuo, near the house that lio occupied, a small shrub marks tho last resting place of Mr John Elliott. Many in Wellington will recollect the tiue, tall, strapping, hale aud hearty setrler who, a few years ago, for .several sessions haunted the Parliament Buildings in connection with a grievance that lie had over tho purchase of a property at Mahoeuni. Mr Elliott made tho acquaintance of many of the members, and when the late Mr Soddou visited the King Country he stayed at his house. Over a year ago Mr Elliott succumbed to an accident. He was roping in a racehorse when he got entangled, aud was crushed against a stump. At first he took little notice of the injury, which was internal, but at Jeugth the symptoms became serious, aud he had to send for a doctor. The doctor operated, but found the case hopeless, and told his patieut lie had only four hours to live. Mr Elliott, wlio was always strong in mind as well as body, thereupon called for writing materia], executed his will, wrote several farewell letters to intimate friends, gave directions of an explicit nature about the winding up of his affairs, and then, like a brave man, as ho was, remarking that lie thought ho had carefully wound up his estate, fell asleep. Me Elliott's brothers and relatives have large aud valuable estates m this locality.
