The remains of Algernon Charles Swinburne, the poet, were buried at Bonchurch, in the Isle of Wight.
The deceased had expressed a desire that no religious ceremony should be observed, but despite this the rector of Bonchurch read passages from the service for the burial of the dead,
causing great indignation among
some of tho mourners
