GENERAL BOOTH.
HIS EVANGELICAL CAREER
Geueral Booth was born at Nottingham ou April 10th, 1829, being the eldest sou of a builder, aud was formerly a minister of the New Connection Church. Educated at Nottingham by a private theological tutor of the Methodist New Couuectiou Church, he was couverted at the age of 15, and commenced immediately to preach iv the open air iv Nottingham. Entering the ministry iv 1852. he was appointed a travelling evangelist, aud while engaged in this work came to London, and was struck by the destitute condition of the eastern portiou of its populatiou. On July sth, 1865, he commenced special efforts on their behalf. The effort was at first, styled the Christian Mission, but developed iv 1878 into the Salvation Army, which has grown uutil, in 1907, it had 7820 corps, circles, and societies, established in 54 countries aud colonies, with 20,306 officers aud employes —that is, men aud womeu maintained for the work. General Booth is the author of several religious works. Married in 1855 to Catherine Mumford, his wife died iv 1890. There are three sous and four daughters of the marriage.
