EDUCATION BOARD.

At tho Education Board meeting, yesterday, Greytowu's recommendation that Mr H. W. King be appointed captain of the local cadet corps was approved, but Mr King is not to act iv the dual capacity of officer in the cadets and iv the volunteers, as tin duties conflicted. Maryborough's proposed arrangements for temporary accommodation during alterations were agreed to. The Board accepted ou trial tho Department's proposal to provide school books to the iufauts aud the childreu of too first and second standards free throughout the district. A permanent teacher in cookery is to be appointed in January at a salary of £100 per annum. Painting was authorised at Mauriceville West, patntiug aud repairs at Greytowu and Carterton. The followiug tenders, among others, were accepted :—Mauriceville, Smith aud Sous; Gladstone, T. Barker, Gladstone; Waingavva, D. T. King, Cartertou ; Wharau, A. R Wallace, Carterton ; Piriuoa, A. Taylor, Martinborough; Belvedere and Pouatahi, A. R. Wallace; Matarawa, H. Humphries, Greytown; Martinborough (including erection of two rooms and alterations to a third), W. Maxtou, Greytown. There would be required a number of teachers for staffing new schools; Marauui and Lansdowne would be opened iv February. The proposal to hold a school of elementary instruction in agriculture at Greytown, beginning on January 25th ancl terminating ou February sth, was approved. The teachers who attend will givo up one week of their holidays, and Committees will be askod to sanction an extension of tho holidays for au additional week, so that the period of instruction may exteud to a lortuight. The Department will defray tho railway expenses. The Education Board's offices will bo ciosecl from Weduesday, 23rd inst., to Monday, January lith.

A man named Hugh Roberts applied to tho Feiluiug Licensing Committee for a wholesalo licouse. The application was opposed by tho No-License Leaguo, Rev. Beecroft (President Methodist Conference) aud Rev. G. Budd, with R. W. Neal, secretary, appearing to object. The Licensing Committee refused to grant the license till applicant had started the other business which he said he had in view. Ac a well-attended No-License thanksgiving mooting hold at Ashburton, the following resolution was unanimously carried: "That this meeting expresses its appreciation of .the attitude adopted by the Premier with reference to the intention of the Liquor trade to place a brewery ou the boundary of the Ashburton electorate, aud thanks him for his promise to introduce legislation to give effect to the will of the people iv No-License areas." The Wauganui tramways were officially opened yesterday afternoon. The cars ware filled up till the last trip, aud everything went satisfactorily. Four cars are being used, but another is vow Deing constructed. A ten-minute service is being run.
