Mr Hogg's Kuripuni address lastevening suggests that the Masterton contest has degenerated into a regrettable exchange of personalities,and that the electorate is thus getting perilously near the gutter.

In consequence of the last day for nominations falling on November 9th, when telegraph offices are usuaally shut, instructions have been given that at all stations it will be necessary to open again at five, and remain open till the Returning Officers are clear. —Association.

The Hon. J. A. Miller has been hooted at a crowded Dunedin meeting. We begin to think that Mr Millar must be a fairly honest man.

Our Carterton contemporary writes: —"The practical certainty that th« Government which Mr Hogg supports will come back to power is a potent factor in Masterton as well as in the Wairarapa against s r otes being given to au Opposition candidate. "

Mr C. Hall, M.P., Government candidate for the Waipawa seat, is at present laid aside by a severe attack of influenza. At such a time this illness is most inconvenient for Mr Hall, but his supporters are keeping the work going until he recovers sufficiently to again take the platform.

The Prime Minister, who returned to Wellington ou Sunday, states that certain candidates, for party reasons, still continue to predict trouble and disaster, when there is absolutely nothing to warrant their gloomy anticipations. He maintains that the state of the Dominion's public finance was never better than it is to-day.

The inmates of the Inobriates' Home, at Pakatoa Island, although kept there for certain periods under compulsion, have not, it appears, lost their rights of citizenship (says the Auckland Herald). They are, at any rate, to have the right of voting at the forthcoming election, and the island being iv the Mauukau electorate , , their names have been placed on the roll for that district. Arrangements are also being made for lirovidina a polling botli on the island, so that the "residents" will, have no difficulty in recording their votes. In view of the fact that they have been placed there for insobriety, it will be interesting to learn how they regard the No-License question.
