There seems to be a general and unmistakable desire for the success of Mr T. E. Taylor in his candidature for the representation in Parliament

of Ohristcliurch North. Among our public men there are few—very few indeed—whose return to the House is a national benefit, even as their rejection was not a national misfortune. Of such men it may be said that, in the broader interests of the community, it matters nothing to which political side they may belong, or if they "go aloue." Their high principle gives assurance that they will support only righteous measures, and put aside selfish considerations; their exceptional ability is a guarantee that they will wield material influence in the Legislature. Mr Taylor's temporary eclipse by Mr 0. M. Gray at tlie last election created a situation whose disappointing character was partially relieved by it? absurdity. It was an interlude that is not likely to be repeated. Mr Taylor, if he succeeds this time, will go in amid general congratulations, and no one can doubt, having regard to his previous career in Parliament, and to his brilliant abilities as an expositor and advocate, and his incisive style in debate, that he will be a power. His character is a guarantee that lie

will be a power for good. If only by contrast, such a , man is a power for good. Mr Taylor is a foremost figure in politics, and he will have many sincere well wishers for bis success.
