ON THE SAFE SIDE.
One Christinas Eve a police inspector rushed breathlessly up to the boathouse and inquired: "Have you let out a boat, called the "Alice," to-day?"
"Yes, guv'uor, " replied the proprietor. "Au hour ago, to a youug couple." "Then there's been an accident," said the officer. "We picked up the boat below the weir, floating bottom upwards.'' 'What about the sculls and cushions?" anxiously asked the owner.
"Oh! never mind them." said the inspector disgustedly. "What about the occupauts?"
"It's all right about them," replied the boatman. "They paid me in advance.''
