GISBORNE, Last Night
News has been received by tho local nolice to-day that Hare Matenga has been captured. Matenga was wanted on a charge of stealing a horse about two years ago. Some time ago au expedition was sent out to capture him, bub was unsuccessful, aud the party had a hard time, the weather being very rough. Since Mateuga took to the bush after the alleged horse-stealing, ho has beeu blamed for a number of petty thefts from bush camps. A short time ago Detective Broberg, Constable Skinner, and a man named Green, who has a kuowledge of the district, left town to seek him. On Mouday they left Tahora to inquire iuto a report that a strange Maori had been seen at the Rangiora pa. From there they followed the trial, aud came upon Mateuga at Harapepa pa, about fifty miles from town. Mateuga was takeu iuto custody, aud is said to have admittod suudry thefts from bush camps.
