MAIN TRUNK LINE.

The construction of the North Island Main Trunk railway (says the. Taihape "News" of Saturday) is rapidly advancing towards Ohakune. The locomotive, with trucks containing,., material for extension, crossed the Waugaelm bridge this week. Mr Furkett will now have "straight going" until the Ninia station is reached. It is anticipated that the rails will be laid into the Ninia station yard by

the end of the present mouth. With

the rails laid to that point, Ohakuue be brought to within six miles rail communication. The ballast engines which were employed hauling metal from the Ohingaiti and Toi Toi pits for the past twelve months have been withdrawn. Mr Furkett starts hauling gravel from the Waiouru pit this week. The rails are now laid to within three miles of Karioi. The public are beginning to evince some anxiety for the opening of a passenger time-table service between Taihape and Waiouru. It is thought unlikely that any move will be made in the direction of opening another section of the line until the station buildings are completed at Waiouru and Ninia. It is to be hoped that before the advent of the winter a passenger train service will be established.
