Marylebone v. New Zealand

The First Test Match

The first test match between the Marylebone cricket team and a picked New Zealand eleven was commenced on Lancaster Park, Christehureh, yesterday afternoon. The weather was uupropitious, but there was a large attendance of spectators. The New Zealand captain, D. Reese, won the toss, and went in with Lawrence, Douglas and Branstou bowling. Reese was bowled by the fourth ball, without scoring. Haddon joined Lawrence. At 45, Torrens took the ball from Douglas, and at 50 May went on at the other end. The new bowler's fifth ball proved fatal to Lawrence, who, in playing forward, was clean bowled. 52—2—18. Tucker took his place. In May's next over Haddon was caught at .short-leg, and Siedeberg, who followed, was bowled first ball. May's bowling result thus far was two overs for four runs and three wickets. Mahouy was next in. Siinpson-Hayward presently relieved Torrens with uuder-hands. At 95 Douglas took May's place, and Mahouy sent up 100 with a beautiful leg-stroke for four. At 4.10 p. m. the players adjourned for afternoon tea. On resuming, Douglas started bowling from the south end, and Tucker was caught in the slips by Torrens off the fifth ball of the over. 105—5—18. Sale was next, and after sending 110 up was yorked by Douglas. Calloway was clean bowled first ball. Bennett joined Mahony, but after a four to leg and a single he played Douglas on. 128—8—5. Downes followed. Mahony reached his half-century witli a pretty back cut for three, and a similar stroke sent up 150. Downes cut well' for four, and drove for a two and a three. When Siinpson-Hayward took the ball from Torrens, Mahony readied (i 0 with a single, and got May through the .slips for four. May then bowled Downes. 1(59—»—1(5.
