THE MASTERTON ALPS.

Excursion to Mount Holdsworth

The final meeting of the elementary agri- , culture class for school teachers in Masterton, | for this year, took the form of a trip to Mount Holdsworth, under the direction of Mr \Y. C. Davies, agricultural and horticultural instructor. Several South Wairarapu teachers were included in the party, which numbered/about thirty-six. They left Mas- j terton at half-past live on Friday evening, ; and arrived before dusk on Mr Thompson's ; farm at tho foothills. From there they ! started at live o'clock next morning, under \ the guidance of Messrs Sutherland (Crown ! Lauds Ranger) and C. Bannister, on the ' ascent. TheMaungatarere stream was forded | saftly, though it is known to be somewhat dan |

gerous owing to the sudden freshets to which

it is liable. About!) o'clock the party gained the upper camp, where they hft several of the lady members. Some more of the were left at the limit of the forest belt, ami about eighteen struck for the summit, which

they reached at noon. Camp was arrived at again between 5 and C p.m. Many botanical specimens of interest were noted during the ascent, including some native orchids. The view from the summit was marred by mist,

but at a lower elevation a grand panorama was presented to view, Masterton resembling a tiny speck on the great expanse of undulating plain. The trip, on the whole, was most enjoyable and instructive.
