OBITUARY.

Lady Mary Tagart,

Writes a London correspondent, under date 26th October :—The news was recently received by cable from India of the death'of Lady Mary Tagart, but fuller particulars have just been received by mail, to the effect that Lady Mary accompanied her husband, Major H. A. Tagart, D.5.0., 15th Hussars, Brigade-Major Cavalry Brigade, Meerut, on a shooting expedition to Gilgit in August. She was a great traveller, and had previously been all round Australia, New Zealand, Samoa, Fiji and the Tonga Islands. Major and Lady Mary Tagart were present at Gilgit on Ist September, and witnessed the gathering of the wild Indus Valley chiefs to greet the entry of Sir Francis Younghusband, the new Resident of Kashmir. They were on their way back, and Major Tagart had left her quite well in the rest-house at Bunji, thirty-two miles south of Gilgit, while he went up into the hills above for a few days after markhor. He received a letter from her one day to say that she was not quite well. He hurried back, and found her very ill. It was three days before he could get a doctor, and then, in spite of his skill and care, after doing well she suddenly sank from weakness on 21st September. She was buried at Gilgit next day. At the time of her death, the deceased lady was only m her 36th year.
