THE PARIS SENSATION.
{Received To-day, at 5.40 a.m.)
Paris, Last Night. The Magistrate's investigation shows that Dr Herbert was Pesnel's dupe throughout.
Paul Cebron was recently charged with committing a murderous assault on Dr Herbert, a Canadian, who lives in London, but recently visited Paris. Dr Herbert lent Cebron £360 while visiting the Cebrons at Bois-le-Roy, and was after wards.shot in the head, though he eventually succeeded in escaping. Marie Pesnel and Cebron, who are alleged to be associated with extensive matrimonial agency swindles were subsequently arrested. The police searched a villa on the outskirts of Versailles, occupied by Cebron, and discovered a collection of spades, axes, etc., and the floor of the cellar of the house, having apparently been recently disturbed, attracted suspicion. The police started digging to discover whether anything is buried there. Scotland Yard is now at work on sidelights with regard to the Frenchman Cebron, who is known to have conducted a matrimonial agency in London.
The relatives of a merchant named Jefquires have since informed the police that he mysteriously disappeared in 1903, after advancing 3800 francs (£150) to M. Cebron and Marie Pesnel. It is now alleged that Marie Pesnel has been associated with Cebron in extensive swindles in connection with a matrimonial agency. M. Jefquires' money was advanced in connection with a sterilised milk scheme organised by Pesnel prior to her entry into the matrimonial agency business.
Dr. Herbert, who is now recovering from injuries inflicted upon him by Cebron, declares that Marie Pesnel once asked him to write out a cheque, remarking that she " wished to learn how to draw a cheque." He is now convinced that Cebron and Pesnel intended to murder him, and then forge his name with a view to withdrawing a sum of £2000 from his banking account.
