THE AMERICA CUP.

♦• —

A cable message in yesterday's issue was to the effect lhat the New York Herald stated that the Yacht Club had accepted Sir Thomas Lipton's challenge for the America Cup in 1908.

Sir Thomas Lipton, seen on board the Celtic en route to New York, at Queenstown, lately, said he was not yet in a position to say when he would challenge again for the America Cup. The thing at present to be considered was that the rules applying to Cup racers were almost prohibitive. It was never contemplated fifty-two years ago, when the measurement rules were framed, that Cup racers should become the dangerous machines they were — freaks, in fact. If he challenged again he would entrust his design to William Fife or Alfred Milne. He would meet the committee of the New York Yacht Club during his visit, and discuss the rules with them. The club had treated him with unbounded kindness and consideration. Sir Thomas favoured a wholesome, safe class of boat, measured on recognised yachting rules. She would be something smaller than the late contestants. If ever he challenged the challenge would would again be under an Irish club, he was not particular which. He reminded the correspondent that he was a member of the Royal Cork Yacht Club, the most ancient in the kingdom. If there is any change in the rules Sir Thomas said he would challenge at once, and then a Cup contest in the fall of next year might be looked for.
