MASTERTON FRIENDLY SOCIETIES' COUNCIL.
A meeting of the Masterton Friendly Societies' Council was held in the Foresters' Hall last night. There were present: — Messrs Thos. Duncan (chair), J. R. Campbell, A. 11. Gardner, P. Smith, A. G. Wise, S. O'Regan, B. Chapman, W. Candy, and P. J. O'Leary.
The question of rules was discussed, and it was decided to adopt those of the Wellington Council, with various alterations.
The following officers were elected for the ensuing year : —President, Mr Thos. Duncan; Vice-President, Mr P. Smith ; Secretary and Treasurer, Mr A. G. Wise.
Mr T. Duncan was appointed delegate to the Conference of Friendly Societies to be held at Wellington on 21st May.
It was decided to forward the following remits for consideration at the conference— (1) That, in the opinion of this conference of Friendly Societies, it is desirable that there should bo an amalgamation of the whole of the various Friendly Societies in New Zealand, and that steps be taken to bring about such amalgamation; (2) that, in the opinion of this conference, it is desirable that all Friendly Societies in New Zealand should have a Death Levy Scheme on the same lines as the Druids' scheme.
The opinion was expressed that if amalgamation could be brought about there would be a large saving in the working expenses, and the benefits to be derived would be largely increased. The meeting adjourned till Wednesday, 'April 25th, at 7,30 p.m.
