RUSSO-JAPANESE WAR.

Mysterious Fate of a Ship

An incident of the Russo-Japanese war came before the London Probate Court last month, when Sir Gorrell Barnes gave leave to presume the death of Captain Edward Evaus Thomas, who, in September, 190-1, sailed from Barry Dock in the steamer Claverdale with a cargo of coal for Yladivostock. The vessel arrived at Hongkong in the following moiuh, and on the 24th she left for Vladivostock. Since that date nothing has been heard of either the captain or the crew, and the vessel was posted at Lloyd's as a total loss. In February, 1905 a belonging to the Claverdale was pkHa up at sea, and in September the Claverdale herself was discovered ashore, about 450 miles north of Vladivostock. The ship had been plundered of everything moveable, and nothing could be ascertained as to the fate of the captain and crew.
