CARTERTON UNITED FRIENDLY SOCIETIES.

Sports Committee Meeting.

A meeting of the General Committee of the above was held, on Friday night, in the Council Chambers, Carterton, twenty-one members being- present. His Worship the Mayor (Mr Jas. Browo) presided.

Lieutenant Herd, of Wellington, wrote accepting the position of judge of the Band item.

Staff-Sergeant McNair, in reply to a request (the Sports Committee having obtained permission from the Head Officer to allow Staff-Sergeant McNair to act), wrote expressing his willingness to judge the marching in the band event, and to help in any other way lie could. The Druids , Lodge notified that Bro. C. Billman had been elected on the Committee #n the place of Bro. E. McKonzie, resigned. Mr W. T. Masson wrote resigning from the Committee, owing to his absence from the district at the time of the Sports. Mr T. J. Rathbonj wrote, stating his inabilty to act in the position allotted him. A quantity of other correspondence was received and dealt with. Mr C. Reid reported that the Canvassing Committee had made a canvass of the town that day, and had collected £60, most of which was cash, the balance being in trophies. Mr G. A. Fairbrother reported that the Druids' Lodge had not yet sent in the names of ladies for the Committee in connection ■with the luncheon arrangements. The ladies already appointed met last Friday week, and held an enthusiastic meeting. Their various suggestions were discussed and the report ■was adopted. Mrs Smith and Miss Moare were appointed to take charge of the fruit stall, Mesdames A. L. Whyte and Baggarley to take charge of the tea kiosk, and Mesdames Molloy and »E. Beard to take charge of the luncheon booth. It was decided that no intoxicating |drink should be sold on the ground. No replies were received from the headteachers of the various schools in regard to the scholars taking part in the procession on the day of the sports. All school children are invited to take part in the procession. It was reported that the Ground Committee were getting the ground in order, and had engaged Mr W. Bridge to do the necessary work required on same. It was resolved that it be a recommendation to the Ground Committee to engage Mr R. Darroch for three clays. It was decided that it be a recommendation to the Official Committee to hold a dance, interspersed with songs, in the Victoria Hall, on the night of the Sports. • Bandmaster Simpson, of the Carterton Brass Band, and a registered member of the Masterton Band, were granted permission to play in both bands in connection with the band contest event at the sports. Messrs B. Simpson and W. Toomath were appointed a sub-committee to supervise the details in connection with the band event. & It was decided that the badges for judges be red; blue for the committee ; and red, white and blue for the secretaries. Mr J. M. Light-foot was appointed to bring up a report at next meeting for a Protest Committee.

The date of closing of entries for the band and fire brigade events was extended to the 1-ith of December.
