THE LATE MR JOB VILE, M.H.R.

The funeral of the late Mr Job Vile took place at Pahiatua on Saturday afternoon. The mourning cortege started from the residence of Mr H. Vile, whence the body had been conveyed from Marton on the previous day. If the funeral of Mr O'Meara, formerly member for Pahiatua, is excepted, the procession of mourners was the largest yet witnessed in this part of the Colony. The distance travelled to the cemetery—which is near Mangatainoka—is over two miles, and for the first half-mile some scores of people walked on foot, afterwards getting into the conveyances. Between forty and fifty vehicles altogether followed the hearse and including horsemen and others, the procession was over a quarter of a mile in length. The friends and relatives of the deceased, hailing from parts near and distant, alone formed a numerous gathering. Among the mourners were deceased's sons, the Mayor (Mr D. Crewe), and members of the Pahiatua Borough Council, the Chairman and members of the County Council, Mr A. W. Hogg, M.M.R., Mr Hawkins, formerly M.11.R. for Pahiatua, Mr A. Reese, J.P., and a large number of settlers from Ballance. The service over the grave was quiet and mournful, but most impressive. The Cabinet sent a Iloral tribute and crosses, and immortelles were numerous. Mr Ross, M.H.R. for Pahiatua, would have been present, but was suddenly called away by the serious illness of his wife.
