RANGITUMAU NOTES.
(Special to Daily Times.)
Rangitumau Hall was crowded to its utmost capacity on Thursday evening, in spite of the inclement weather, the occasion being a concert arranged in aid of the funds of the Maori Mission. %he entertainment provided was of a most varied nature, and was received with marked approval by the audience right to the end. Mr J. McGregor, senr., occupied the chair, and in his opening remarks spoke of the need of mission work among the Maoris. The following items were contributed :—Duet (in character), " Gipsy Countess," Miss jtf. and Mr J. W. Stuckey ; recitation, Miss Daniell; song, Mr Gordon; song, Mrs Te Tau ; recitation, MiMcGregor ; song, Mr Fendall; Nodding Chorus and Laughing Chorus, by the company. M*r Minifie succeeded iv mystifying the audience by a clever display of conjuring tricks.
The chief item of the entertainment, how-' ever, consisted in the hearing of a breach of promise case, in which Miss Perkins, who was stated to be a resident of Rangitumau, claimed £1000 damages from Mr Peter Bell, a supposed resident of Dreyerton. Judge Hollings presided over the Court, Dr. Pointz appeared for the plaintiff, and MrH. H. Sharper-Keen for the defendant. The following served on the jury : Messrs F. Orpington-Buff, T. J. Hayseed, Hubert Fiddlebow, T. Basso-Profundo, Thomas Ruatnahanga. Henry Fireworks, J. Hereford Southdown, Orlando Disker, Jeremiah Bluff, J. Stump Battely, Thomas Longshanks and Ebenezer Crosscut. The first-named was chosen foreman. Mr T. Ernspast carried out the duties of Clerk of the Court, while Mr T. Kopper was the constable in attendance. Dr. Pointz addressed the jury at length, and brought forward many witnesses, but was unable to establish his case. Having listened to learned counsel for the defence, and the judge's summing up, the jury, after about half a minute's deliberation, brought in a verdict for the defendant.
Votes jof thanks to the performers, ancl the singing of the " National Anthem," terminated a very enjoyable entertainment. Miss M. Stuckey carried out the duties of Secretary, aud to her efforts much of the success of the evening is due.
