A Press Association message from Dunedin records the death of Mr AY. H. Taggart, one of the founders of the Dunedin Jockey Club, and a member of the committee at the time of his demise. [This name came to us yesterday as Toggart or Foggart. It was impossible to say which.]

Two cyclists, neither carrying a light, came into violent collision in Chapel-street last evening, and as one of them mournfully picked himself and his sadly "buckled." bike up off the road, and carried the damaged machine home, he probably made a mental resolve never —never again, to ride minus a light. The next best mail despatch for Continent of Europe and United Kingdom will be via San Francisco, closing at Masterton on AVednesday, 25th October, at 4.45 o'clock, due London, 25th November. Money orders for despatch by this mail must be procured before 4 p.m. on Tuesday, 24th October. The inward 'Frisco mail steamer " Sonoma " is due in Auckland on Monday, 30th October.

The First Contingent Association will hold its fifth annual dinner at Godber's on Friday, Trafalgar Day, the real anniversary of which—the 21st—is also the anniversary of the contingent's departure for Africa. The original strength of the corps was 112. Twenty-three of the members of the First Contingent were killed in action or died of wounds or disease, and a large number of them are still in Africa.

At. the Anglican Synod at Aucklandja resolution was carried recording the conviction of. the Synod that the present legalised facilities for divorce are undermining the family life of the nation, and the church should strive to educate public opinion towards upholding the sanctity of the marriage tie, and the removal from the Statute-book of Acts legalising divorce with right of re-marriage in any case excepting adultery.

A contemporary believes that it is not generally known that boiling water will ignite kerosene ; but a South Island resident proved the fact in a rather unpleasant way several weeks ago. He was going to mixkerosene and warm water to spray his fruit trees, and poured some boiling water from the kettle into a tin containing kerosene. It flared up and burnt him pretty severely on the thumb, and on the face severely enough to leave a few marks.

A somewhat mirth-provoking incident occurred at Kuripuni on Tuesday afternoon. A man on horseback was trying to " head " another horse which he was driving and which had taken the wrong road. The equestrian attempted to turn a corner but had "too much way on," and his steed dashed into a high boarded fence on the opposite side of the road. The rider thereupon straightway shot from his horse's back and landed on the top of the fence, in which elevated position he hung for a few seconds, looking considerably surprised at his circuslike achievement. Fortunately he escaped injury.

There- were no fewer than 5192 men, of whom only 199 are artisans, engaged during last month upon State co-operative works in New Zealand. In September of last year the total number was 3159, including 185 artisans. Of those so employed last month 1963 labourers were engaged by the Department of Road, and the remainder by the Public AVorks Department. The North Island Main Trunk railway works absorbed 51 artisans and 1373 labourers (54 artisans and 905 labourers were on the works at the same time last year), the Midland railway 526 men, the Otage Central works 301, and the Blenheim-AVaipara works 261.

For saving a pet cat from drowning some years ago, a Milanese youth named Giuseppe Figari, has been left £4000 by the grateful owner, who has just died. The beneficiary has since gone to America, and has been advised by cable of his legacy.

A case of cerebro spinal meningitis in a horse is now being treated by Mr T. G. Lilico, M.R.C.V.S., Government* veterinarian at Timaru. Although there have been similar cases in the human family, none hitherto have been reported or at least recognised in the equine.

The Masterton District High School is holding a demonstration, this afternoon in honour of Trafalgar Day. Arrangements have been made for the scholars to be addressed by Rev. D. J. Murray, and the Headmaster (Mr AY. 11. Jackson). The British flag will be saluted, and the National Anthem sung. The Municipal Brass Band will be present to take part in the proceedings.

The Boys Training Farm " is to be the name of the institution at AVeraroa (Levin) of which Mr Burlinson, late of Otago, has been appointed manager. It is to be a home where boys who have appeared before the Bench, but who show no criminal tendencies are to be controlled and trained ; it is not to be a reformatory institution of the character of the Burnham Industrial School. The Education Department informs us that the farm will be opened in a few weeks.

The expedition with which local Bills are rushed through the House of Representatives has once more been exemplified. AVednesday morning, between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m., was set apart for the consideration of twentyeight local Bills. In nine minutes eleven Bills were read a second time, one Bill was reported on, debated, and adjourned, and another, being opposed, was also adjourned. In twenty minutes sixteen Bills were considered in Committee and reported, and in ten.minutes the whole of these Bills went through their third reading stage and'were finally passed.

There were eighteen members present at the fortnightly meeting of the Masterton Fire Police and Salvage Corps, last evening. Captain J. Dixon presided. It was decided to enter teams for the Carterton Fire Brigade Sports, to be held on Boxing Day. Instructions were given to the Secretary to write to the Municipal Fire Brigade, asking for the use of the manual lire engine and plant for practice, also, to write to the Fire Brigades Association, for two honorary surgeon's certificates. It was decided to hold a smoke concert on November 29th. Fifteen members of the corps signed their declarations, and were sworn in by Mr E. G. Eton, J.P. The meeting concluded with a vote of thanks to the chair.

At the AVellington Magistrate's Court, Mr Y. M. Braund claimed from E. J. Le Grove, shorthand writer, £50 damages for failing to deliver a report of a speech recently delivered by Mr Braund with reference to the liquidation of the Colonial Bank. Plaintiff said it might become necessary to have the speech read in the House which could not be done as the report had been withheld. Plaintiff had challenged various persons to take proceedings against him and wished to be armed with a correct copy of the speech which the defendant had been engaged to supply but now refused to hand over. For the defence it was contended that, according to Counsel, the speech had "more libel to the square inch in it than I have seen in any document in my life." It was argued that as Mr Le Grove was for the time the servant of plaintiff he was not the le.ponsible party. Dr. A. McAitlrur, S.M., wil give his decision on the 24th.
